What is the relation between social theory and philosophy? Is philosophy somehow more “basic,” or is it necessary to see philosophical reflection as inherently dependent on social theory? What would “social theory” mean in that case? Assuming that a “social theory” approach to philosophy is sound, then what does that imply about politics? Does it too have a philosophical dimension? If so, does that mean that philosophy is inherently practical? One way to approach these questions is to recall some implications of the “linguistic turn” in philosophy – this will be our point of departure for this evening’s discussion.
