The Philosophy Major
Bachelor Degree Requirements
University Requirements:
- 26 credits in Integrative Studies
- Tier I writing requirement (4 credits)
- Tier II writing requirement, must be satisfied by completing PHL 492
College of Arts and Letters Requirements
- 30 credits at the 300-400 level.
- Two cognate areas, at least one of which must be outside Arts and Letters, and one of which must include at least 3 credits at the 300 or 400 level.
- Capstone requirement (PHL 492).
- Second year competency in a foreign language.
Philosophy Department Requirements:
- A total of at least 36 PHL credits, including:
- At least three courses at the 400 level (in addition to PHL 492)
- The senior seminar PHL 492 (offered Fall Semester only)
- History of Philosophy: PHL 210 and PHL 211
- Logic: PHL 130 or PHL 330
- Value Theory: PHL 340 or PHL 350
- Epistemology and Metaphysics: PHL 418 or PHL 420 or PHL 460 or PHL 461 or PHL 462 or PHL 480.
A total of 120 credits are required for graduation.
Note: Students taking philosophy as an additional major are not required to satisfy the College of Arts and Letters Requirements (assuming that their primary major is not also in Arts and Letters). But the College of Arts and Letters Requirements must be satisfied by students whose primary major is philosophy or who are earning a second degree in philosophy.
